Ethan Schmaling, BS

I was born and raised in a primarily rural community where Future Farmers of America (FFA) - now known as National FFA Organization - was a major part of my life. Growing up in that environment shaped my work ethic, my appreciation for agriculture, and my deep connection to the outdoors.

I attended Iowa State University, where I earned a degree in Agricultural Business and Economics with a minor in Political Science. After college, I spent seven years running research trials on swine vaccines. That experience taught me accountability, structure, and the importance of following through—skills I carry into my work today.

My approach to youth skill development is hands-on and experiential, with a strong emphasis on physical activity and nature-based services. I believe young people grow best when they are engaged, moving, and connected to their environment. Session activities are based on what the youth enjoys. I intentionally encourage youth to help guide our sessions—choosing the destination, setting goals, and taking ownership of the process.

I am a firm believer in the power of choice and accountability, whether that means deciding how we spend our time together or taking responsibility for everyday tasks. I enjoy hunting and fishing and cooking what I harvest. I strive to be a champion for the youth I work with. My role is to walk alongside them, support their voice, and remind them that we are in this together.
