Sophia Korpal, MSW, APSW
My passion for working with individuals struggling with mental illness began in high school while working in a residential treatment setting. After high school, I pursued an education where I could learn more about those I was already serving and what else I could do to help others. In 2017 I earned my Bachelor's of Social Work and Spanish through Winona State University in Winona MN, with a minor in child advocacy studies. I later moved to Milwaukee to continue my education graduating from UW-Milwaukee with a Master's in Social Work and Criminal Justice. I currently have my APSW working towards my LCSW.
My work in the field of mental health has been with individuals of all ages and I pride myself on my travels, both educational and independent, which have played a large part in my goal to be culturally diverse. I believe therapy is important to understanding one’s past in order to focus on obtaining a better future. Therapy can also help one process through current situations or to prepare for what is to come. My goal in providing therapy is to allow my clients to take the lead as they are the experts of their lives. My role is to provide them support and guidance and to get my clients to where they want to be.
The power of the human brain and body to recover, rewire, and continue fighting and building resilience is a beautiful thing. I have been able to experience other’s resilience and promote their perseverance in many settings. I have experience working with youth struggling with anxiety, depression, and with past and ongoing trauma in a day treatment setting, as well as with adults struggling to manage life stressors, trauma, and severe and persistent mental illness. I have also worked with individuals battling suicidal ideation due to depression, anxiety, PTSD, and persons suffering from delusions and hallucinations due to severe and persistent mental illness. My extensive experience working with individuals in mental health crises has provided me insight into the difficulties of obtaining outpatient treatment options, navigating inpatient treatment, and shown me that with support and a will to thrive people can remain in the community.
